Christianity versus Islam

JESUS

Jesus is God incarnate, referred to in the Bible as the “only begotten Son” of God (John 1:14,18; 3:16)

The incarnation of God in Jesus was the fulfillment of ancient prophecies

The incarnation of God in Jesus was not out of necessity, but an expression of God’s love

Jesus was crucified. His crucifixion was witnessed by his mother and many of his followers, including the apostle John (John 19:25-27; Luke 23:49)

Jesus died and was buried. His death was confirmed by Pilate, and his body was prepared by Joseph of Arimathae'a and Nicodemus (John 19:38-42)

Jesus was resurrected the third day. He remained on earth for forty days (Acts 1:3), during which time he appeared to many of his followers, his disciples, and, on one occasion, he was seen by five hundred people (1 Corinthians
15:4-6)

MUHAMMAD

Jesus, not Muhammad, was the promised prophet like unto Moses as foretold in Deuteronomy 18:18. The Bible testifies that this prophecy is
a reference to Jesus in
Acts 3:22-26

The "paraclete" (Greek for "comforter") promised by Jesus in John 14:16 is a reference to the Holy Spirit, as stated in John 14:26)

Jesus was the final revelation by God

THE TRINITY

Belief in the Trinity is not a belief in three gods.

The presence of the Trinity is evident in the account of the baptism of Jesus (Mt 3:13-17; Mk 1:9-11; Lk 3:21-22; John 1:31-34)

AUTHORITY OF
THE BIBLE

Jesus promised, “Heaven and earth will pass away, but my words will never pass away” (Mt 24:35)

There is no credible argument for the corruption of the Bible. Jesus taught from the Scriptures of the Old Testament. The Old and New Testaments are in unity. Scriptures were kept and guarded by many diverse peoples of different languages, cultures and regions. All would have had to conspire to change the Scriptures

AUTHORITY OF
THE QUR'AN

There is no further revelation after the Bible, which warns against adding to or taking from God's word (Deuteronomy 4:2; Proverbs 30:6; Revelation 22:18-19)

The Qur'an contains verses that were abrogated by later revelations, a characteristic that is inconsistent with a perfect, unchanging God

The Qur'an borrows several words and forms of names from other languages, though it is said to be written in the language of God

There exist some historical inaccuracies in the Qur'an, such as the references to Mary, the mother of Jesus as being the sister of Aaron (Qur'an 19.28) and the daughter of Imran (3.35). Mary, the mother of Jesus, lived some 1570 years after the sister of Aaron and daughter of Imran (named Maryam)

SALVATION

Because God is Holy and man is sinful, neither can man do anything to save himself, nor can God arbitrarily accept less than a perfect sacrifice for man’s redemption

There is no means of salvation other than faith in Jesus Christ (Acts 4:12)

Faith in Jesus Christ gives assurance of salvation (Rom 10:9)

GOD

God is One

God is the Creator of all things
God is Holy

God will judge all men on
the Day of Judgment

God is just

God is merciful

JESUS

Born of the virgin Mary

Lived a sinless life

Performed miracles, such as healing
and raising the dead

Called “the Word of God”

Will return to earth on Judgment Day

MAN

All men need God's forgiveness and mercy

HOLY BOOKS

The Law (Tawrat) given to Moses

The Psalms (Zabur) given to David

The Gospel (Injil)

PROPHETS

Of the twenty-five prophets mentioned in the Qur’an, all but four are from the Bible.

Those most notable are:

Zechariah
John the Baptist
Jesus
Adam
Noah
Abraham
Moses

ATONEMENT

The Qur’an records (Suras 37:99-111)
the story of Abraham offering his son as a sacrifice. God offered a ram as a substitute.

LAST DAY

End of the world

Resurrection

Day of Judgment

Rewards for the faithful

JESUS

The Qur’an says those who say that Christ is God commit blasphemy
(Qur’an 5.7)

The associating of God's divine nature with man is a sin called "shirk"

Jesus was not crucified; it only appeared so. Those who believe otherwise are confused (Qur'an 4.157)

MUHAMMAD

Muhammad was the last of
the prophet

He was sent as a warner to
preach one God (Qur'an 7.158)

He received the Qur'an in order to
correct the errors introduced into
the Scriptures

THE TRINITY

Muhammad preached against the concept of a Trinity held by the Sabaeans, a heretical Christian sect of Muhammad’s time.
This Trinity consisted of God the Father, Mary the Mother, and Jesus the Son (Qur’an 5.116)

The Qur’an calls blasphemy the contention that God is one of three in a trinity (Qur’an 5.73)

The Qur’an records Jesus’ denial that he told men to worship him
(Qur’an 5.116)

AUTHORITY OF

THE BIBLE

The Qur’an teaches that the Bible was purposely corrupted (Qur’an 2.75)

The books of Moses, Psalms, and the Gospels are acceptible insofar as they agree with the Qur'an

AUTHORITY OF
THE QUR'AN

The Qur'an contains the very words of God and is identical with the "mother of the book" in heaven

The Qur'an was written in Arabic, the original language of God and man

The Qur'an was given to correct the errors in the Scriptures which had been purposely corrupted

SALVATION

Salvation is based on one’s righteousness. In the final judgment, man’s good deeds will be weighed in a scale against his sin to determine if he will dwell in Paradise

There exists no deathbed conversion (Qur’an 4.18)

There is no assurance of salvation, except for one killed in jihad
(Qur'an 9.111).
Every man’s destiny is as God wills
