Christian
Life
The impact of religion on
people’s lives is extremely profound. Survey after survey has
proven most people believe in one type of religion or another. This
reflects the inner longing of the human heart to believe in something
which may meet and satisfy that longing. When talking about the impact
of Christianity on one’s daily life, three important aspects must
be taken into consideration:
There must be a differentiation
between nominal Christianity and genuine Christianity. Nominal Christianity
is the external ceremonial rituals of Christianity which have no serious
effect on the life of a person. Its adherents call themselves Christians
because they are born into families who claim to be Christians. They
are not practicing Christians and according to the scripture, are not
better than the heathens. Genuine Christianity is Christianity which
is practiced by the committed believers of Christ who live a Christ-like
life in every aspect of their lives.
Christianity is not a set of doctrines, religious duties or rituals.
Christianity is Christ. He is the center of one’s faith as a person.
It is more appropriate to say the "Impact of Christ on Life"
rather than "The Impact of Christianity on Life." Without
Christ, there is no Christianity and Christianity becomes void.
There is no one-single nation in the world that can claim it is a Christian
nation. Christianity is a personal experience or individual conversion
experienced by the individual as a result of personal faith in the act
of atonement accomplished by Christ.
Thus, what we see in many so-called Christian countries has nothing
to do with Christianity and is even contrary to Christian values and
practices. If Jesus Christ would walk on our streets today and watch
the activities in our schools, homes. Offices, roads and even our churches,
He surely would be as outraged as He was when He entered the temple
in Jerusalem which was defiled by the practices of the people of Israel.
Therefore, there is no better way to magnify the impact of Christ on
a person’s life than to quote His actual words and the teachings
of the Gospel as they pertain to our moral behavior, relationships with
each other, our views toward life and society and our relationship with
God. In His Sermon on the Mount, Jesus discussed many issues. Among
them:
The
Christian’s Attitude
"Blessed are the pure in heart, for they shall see God. Blessed
are the peacemakers, for they shall be called sons of God. Blessed are
those who have been persecuted for the sake of righteousness, for theirs
is the kingdom of heaven. Blessed are you when men cast insults at you,
and persecute you, and say all kinds of evil against you falsely, on
account of Me. Rejoice, and be glad, for your reward in heaven is great,
for so they persecuted the prophets who were before you." Matthew
5:8-12
The
Christian’s Role in Society
"You are the salt of the earth; but if the salt has become tasteless,
how will it be made salty again? It is good for nothing anymore, except
to be thrown out and trampled under foot by men. You are the light of
the world. A city set on a hill cannot be hidden. Nor do men light a
lamp, and put it under the peck-measure, but on the lampstand; and it
gives light to all who are in the house. Let your light shine before
men in such a way that they may see your good works, and glorify your
Father who is in heaven."Matthew 5:13-16
The
Christian’s values
Human Life
"You have heard that the ancients were told, 'You shall not commit
murder' and 'Whoever commits murder shall be liable to the court.'But
I say to you that everyone who is angry with his brother shall be guilty
before the court; and whoever shall say to his brother, 'Raca,' shall
be guilty before the supreme court; and whoever shall say, 'You fool,'
shall be guilty enough to go into the fiery hell. If therefore you are
presenting your offering at the altar, and there remember that your
brother has something against you, leave your offering there before
the altar, and go your way; first be reconciled to your brother, and
then come and present your offering." Matthew 5:21-24
Conflicts
"Make friends quickly with your opponent at law while you are with
him on the way, in order that your opponent may not deliver you to the
judge, and the judge to the officer, and you be thrown into prison.
Truly I say to you, you shall not come out of there, until you have
paid up the last cent." Matthew 5:25-26
Adultery
"You have heard that it was said, 'You shall not commit adultery';
but I say to you, that everyone who looks on a woman to lust for her
has committed adultery with her already in his heart. And if your right
eye makes you stumble, tear it out, and throw it from you; for it is
better for you that one of the parts of your body perish, than for your
whole body to be thrown into hell. And if your right hand makes you
stumble, cut it off, and throw it from you; for it is better for you
that one of the parts of your body perish, than for your whole body
to go into hell." Matthew 5:27-30
Divorce
"And it was said, 'Whoever sends his wife away, let him give her
a certificate of divorce'; but I say to you that everyone who divorces
his wife, except for the cause of unchastity, makes her commit adultery;
and whoever marries a divorced woman commits adultery." Matthew
31-31
Honesty
"Again, you have heard that the ancients were told, 'You shall
not make false vows, but shall fulfill your vows to the Lord.' But I
say to you, make no oath at all, either by heaven, for it is the throne
of God, or by the earth, for it is the footstool of His feet, or by
Jerusalem, for it is the city of the great King. Nor shall you make
an oath by your head, for you cannot make one hair white or black."But
let your statement be, 'Yes, yes' or 'No, no'; and anything beyond these
is of evil." Matthew 5:33-37
Endurance
"You have heard that it was said, 'An eye for an eye, and a tooth
for a tooth.' But I say to you, do not resist him who is evil; but whoever
slaps you on your right cheek, turn to him the other also. And if anyone
wants to sue you, and take your shirt, let him have your coat also.
And whoever shall force you to go one mile, go with him two. Give to
him who asks of you, and do not turn away from him who wants to borrow
from you." Matthew 5:38-42
Love
"You have heard that it was said, 'You shall love your neighbor,
and hate your enemy.' But I say to you, love your enemies, and pray
for those who persecute you in order that you may be sons of your Father
who is in heaven; for He causes His sun to rise on the evil and the
good, and sends rain on the righteous and the unrighteous. For if you
love those who love you, what reward have you? Do not even the tax-gatherers
do the same? And if you greet your brothers only, what do you do more
than others? Do not even the Gentiles do the same? Therefore you are
to be perfect, as your heavenly Father is perfect." Matthew 5:43-48
Charity
"Beware of practicing your righteousness before men to be noticed
by them; otherwise you have no reward with your Father who is in heaven.
When therefore you give alms, do not sound a trumpet before you, as
the hypocrites do in the synagogues and in the streets, that they may
be honored by men. Truly I say to you, they have their reward in full.
But when you give alms, do not let your left hand know what your right
hand is doing that your alms may be in secret; and your Father who sees
in secret will repay you." Matthew 6:1-4
Prayer
"And when you pray, you are not to be as the hypocrites; for they
love to stand and pray in the synagogues and on the street corners,
in order to be seen by men. Truly I say to you, they have their reward
in full. But you, when you pray, go into your inner room, and when you
have shut your door, pray to your Father who is in secret, and your
Father who sees in secret will repay you. And when you are praying,
do not use meaningless repetition, as the Gentiles do, for they suppose
that they will be heard for their many words. Therefore do not be like
them; for your Father knows what you need, before you ask Him."
Matthew 6:5-8
Fasting
"And whenever you fast, do not put on a gloomy face as the hypocrites
do, for they neglect their appearance in order to be seen fasting by
men. Truly I say to you, they have their reward in full. But you, when
you fast, anoint your head, and wash your face so that you may not be
seen fasting by men, but by your Father who is in secret; and your Father
who sees in secret will repay you." Matthew 6:16-18
Spiritual Treasure
"Do not lay up for yourselves treasures upon earth, where moth
and rust destroy, and where thieves break in and steal. But lay up for
yourselves treasures in heaven, where neither moth nor rust destroys,
and where thieves do not break in or steal; for where your treasure
is, there will your heart be also. The lamp of the body is the eye;
if therefore your eye is clear, your whole body will be full of light.
But if your eye is bad, your whole body will be full of darkness. If
therefore the light that is in you is darkness, how great is the darkness!"
Matthew 6:19-23
God and Money
"No one can serve two masters; for either he will hate the one
and love the other, or he will hold to one and despise the other. You
cannot serve God and mammon. For this reason I say to you, do not be
anxious for your life, as to what you shall eat, or what you shall drink;
nor for your body, as to what you shall put on. Is not life more than
food, and the body than clothing? Look at the birds of the air, that
they do not sow, neither do they reap, nor gather into barns, and yet
your heavenly Father feeds them. Are you not worth much more than they?
And which of you by being anxious can add a single cubit to his life's
span? And why are you anxious about clothing? Observe how the lilies
of the field grow; they do not toil nor do they spin, yet I say to you
that even Solomon in all his glory did not clothe himself like one of
these. But if God so arrays the grass of the field, which is alive today
and tomorrow is thrown into the furnace, will He not much more do so
for you, O men of little faith? Do not be anxious then, saying, 'What
shall we eat?' or 'What shall we drink?' or 'With what shall we clothe
ourselves?' For all these things the Gentiles eagerly seek; for your
heavenly Father knows that you need all these things. But seek first
His kingdom and His righteousness; and all these things shall be added
to you. Therefore do not be anxious for tomorrow; for tomorrow will
care for itself. Each day has enough trouble of its own." Matthew
6:24-34
Self Condemnation
"Do not judge lest you be judged. For in the way you judge, you
will be judged; and by your standard of measure, it will be measured
to you. And why do you look at the speck that is in your brother's eye,
but do not notice the log that is in your own eye? Or how can you say
to your brother, 'Let me take the speck out of your eye,' and behold,
the log is in your own eye? You hypocrite, first take the log out of
your own eye, and then you will see clearly to take the speck out of
your brother's eye." Matthew 7:1-5
Trusting God
"Ask, and it shall be given to you; seek, and you shall find; knock,
and it shall be opened to you. For everyone who asks receives, and he
who seeks finds, and to him who knocks it shall be opened. Or what man
is there among you, when his son shall ask him for a loaf, will give
him a stone? Or if he shall ask for a fish, he will not give him a snake,
will he? If you then, being evil, know how to give good gifts to your
children, how much more shall your Father who is in heaven give what
is good to those who ask Him! Therefore, however you want people to
treat you, so treat them, for this is the Law and the Prophets."
Matthew 7:7-12
Hypocrisy
"Not everyone who says to Me, 'Lord, Lord,' will enter the kingdom
of heaven; but he who does the will of My Father who is in heaven. Many
will say to Me on that day, 'Lord, Lord, did we not prophesy in Your
name, and in Your name cast out demons, and in Your name perform many
miracles?' And then I will declare to them, 'I never knew you; depart
from Me, you who practice lawlessness.'" Matthew 7:21-23
Family
Women’s Decency
"In the same way, you wives, be submissive to your own husbands
so that even if any {of them} are disobedient to the word, they may
be won without a word by the behavior of their wives, as they observe
your chaste and respectful behavior. And let not your adornment be {merely}
external-- braiding the hair, and wearing gold jewelry, or putting on
dresses; but {let it be} the hidden person of the heart, with the imperishable
quality of a gentle and quiet spirit, which is precious in the sight
of God. For in this way in former times the holy women also, who hoped
in God, used to adorn themselves, being submissive to their own husbands.
Thus Sarah obeyed Abraham, calling him lord, and you have become her
children if you do what is right without being frightened by any fear."
1 Peter 3:1-6
Family Instructions
"Wives, be subject to your husbands, as is fitting in the Lord.
Husbands, love your wives, and do not be embittered against them. Children,
be obedient to your parents in all things, for this is well-pleasing
to the Lord. Fathers, do not exasperate your children, that they may
not lose heart." Colossians 3:18-21
Slaves and Masters
"Slaves, in all things obey those who are your masters on earth,
not with external service, as those who merely please men, but with
sincerity of heart, fearing the Lord. Whatever you do, do your work
heartily, as for the Lord rather than for men; knowing that from the
Lord you will receive the reward of the inheritance. It is the Lord
Christ whom you serve. For he who does wrong will receive the consequences
of the wrong which he has done, and that without partiality. Masters,
grant to your slaves justice and fairness, knowing that you too have
a Master in heaven." Colossians 3:22-4:1
Concern for Others
"But whoever has the world's goods, and beholds his brother in
need and closes his heart against him, how does the love of God abide
in him? Little children, let us not love with word or with tongue, but
in deed and truth. We shall know by this that we are of the truth, and
shall assure our heart before Him, in whatever our heart condemns us;
for God is greater than our heart, and knows all things." I John
3:17-20
Also, Paul, inspired by the
Holy Spirit commands "Do not sharply rebuke an older man but entreat
him as a father; treat younger men like brothers. Treat older women
like mothers and younger women like sisters. Treat with great consideration
who are truly widowed . . . A woman who is a real widow and is left
entirely alone and desolate, has fixed her hope on God and perseveres
in supplications and prayers night and day." II Timothy 5:1-5
The State
"Let every person be in subjection to the governing authorities.
For there is no authority except from God, and those which exist are
established by God. Therefore he who resists authority has opposed the
ordinance of God; and they who have opposed will receive condemnation
upon themselves. For rulers are not a cause of fear for good behavior,
but for evil. Do you want to have no fear of authority? Do what is good,
and you will have praise from the same; for it is a minister of God
to you for good. But if you do what is evil, be afraid; for it does
not bear the sword for nothing; for it is a minister of God, an avenger
who brings wrath upon the one who practices evil. Wherefore it is necessary
to be in subjection, not only because of wrath, but also for conscience'
sake. For because of this you also pay taxes, for rulers are servants
of God, devoting themselves to this very thing. Render to all what is
due them: tax to whom tax is due; custom to whom custom; fear to whom
fear; honor to whom honor." Romans 13:1-7
"Remind them to be subject
to rulers, to authorities, to be obedient, to be ready for every good
deed, to malign no one, to be uncontentious, gentle, showing every consideration
for all men." Titus 3:1-2
The New Testament provides
us with a beautiful picture of the fruits of the Spirit which are the
fruits of the Christian Life. "But the fruit of the Spirit is love,
joy, peace, patience, kindness, goodness, faithfulness, gentleness,
self-control; against such things there is no law." Galatians 5:22-23
Contrary to the fruits of the spirit are the fruits of evil; Immorality,
impurity, sensuality, idolatry, sorcery, enmities, strife, jealousy,
outbursts of anger, disputes, dissension, factions, envying, drunkenness,
carousing and things like these. Those who practice such things shall
not inherit the Kingdom of God.
