ISLAM IN AMERICA

Did You Know...

  • There are 1.2 billion Muslims in the world, comprising 19.6% of the world population (CSIS report, 1800 K St, NW, Washington, DC, 20006)
  • Islam is growing 21.2% faster than Christianity
  • "Muslims in America already outnumber Presbyterians, Episcopalians, and Mormons, and they are more numerous than Quakers, Unitarians, Seventh-day Adventists, Mennonites, Jehovah's Witnesses, and Christian Scientists, combined. Many demographers say Islam has overtaken Judaism as the country's second-most commonly practiced religion." (US News, 7/20/98)
  • "There are nearly 2000 mosques nationwide as well as numerous Islamic day schools and Sunday and weekend schools." (Omar Khalidi, "Mosque," in Wade Clark Roof, Contemporary American Religion. New York: Macmillan, 2000)

According to a survey released April 26, 2001, by the Council on American-Islamic Relations in Washington, DC: (Click Here to download the complete report)

  • The total number of mosques in the US increased 25% between 1994 and 2000
  • Average attendance of mosques during that same period increased 94%
  • About 34% of regular participants at the typical mosque have joined within the last five years
  • On the average, one in three regular participants (29%) is a convert to Islam

But other studies contest these facts and indicated that these statistics are much exaggerated. This study was conducted by the University of Chicago after CAIR had published their findings.
